Life in the Ouachitas
The Ouachita Mountains are located in western Arkansas and extreme east
-central Oklahoma. Mena, Arkansas is located in the heart of the Ouachitas: 100 miles north of Texarkana, 75 miles west of Hot Springs, Arkansas, 90
miles south of Fort Smith, Arkansas and approximately 250 miles northeast of Dallas, Texas.
The climate in the Ouachita Mountains is pleasant. Winters are cool and often
sunny, with occasional snowfalls. It is not uncommon to have a period of cold winter weather followed by several days of warm spring-like temperatures.
Summers in the Ouachitas can range from quite warm days and warm nights to periods of relatively cool days and nights.
Spring is always beautiful and the autumn days are perfect for hunting, fishing and camping.
Fall in the Ouachita Mountains is about as close to paradise on earth as possible. The temperature is suitable for every activity
from hiking to hunting to picnicking, boating and stream fishing. The fall colors rival butterflies in their beauty and variety.
The elevation of the Ouachita Mountains helps contribute to the healthful climate. The air is clear and fresh. The Ouachita
National Forest covers a great deal of the area surrounding the Mena area, so good hunting, hiking, camping and fishing are always nearby.
Even though the Ouachita National Forest covers much of the
Polk County area, there are many, many tracts of privately held land for sale. Many farms and parcels of land are wood covered with springs, creeks, ponds and feature breath taking panoramas
and abundant wildlife. It is not uncommon to see a black bear lazily passing by or a small herd of deer grazing in the nearby pasture.
With the exception of a few private clubs, alcohol sales in Polk County are illegal. However, nearby Hot Springs and Oklahoma
offer respite for the thirsty residents and visitors.
